Chinese and Russian Tourist Arrivals Surge Despite Overall Dip in Maldives Visitors
World ·
China and Russia have solidified their positions as the Maldives' primary tourism markets, with both nations seeing a sharp increase in visitor numbers compared to last year, despite a slight decline in overall arrivals to the archipelago.
According to the latest statistics from the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, the Maldives welcomed 1,173,922 tourists as of July 18 this year. This figure represents a 4.7 percent decrease compared to the same period in the previous year, suggesting a broader shift in global travel patterns.
However, growth within specific key markets tells a different story. China remains the largest source of tourists for the country, with 195,363 visitors arriving by mid-July—a 14.7 percent increase from the 170,210 recorded during the same timeframe last year.
Russia, the second-largest market, experienced even stronger growth. Statistics show that 167,314 Russian tourists visited the Maldives by July 18, marking a 17 percent rise over the 142,899 arrivals seen in the corresponding period last year.
Beyond nationality, the data provides a clear picture of where visitors are staying. The luxury resort sector continues to dominate the industry, accommodating 834,816 tourists. Guesthouses, which offer a more localized experience on inhabited islands, hosted 262,171 visitors.
Other accommodation sectors also contributed to the totals, with hotels housing 27,523 guests and safari vessels—popular for diving and cruising—accommodating 22,381 tourists. These figures highlight the diverse range of tourism products the Maldives offers, from high-end luxury to adventurous sea-based stays.
