Civil Aviation Minister Reports Positive Recovery and Reforms for National Airline Maldivian

Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen has stated that the reforms introduced by the current administration to the national airline, Maldivian, are yielding increasingly positive results. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the airline's new seaplane terminal, the Minister emphasized that the facility meets international industry standards and serves as a benchmark for state-owned corporate progress. Addressing the company's history, Minister Ameen noted a significant decline in Maldivian's operational health between 2018 and 2023. He attributed this deterioration to mismanagement, which left the national carrier heavily indebted. The government's current strategy is focused on reversing these trends and strengthening the airline's financial and operational foundations to ensure it remains a source of national pride. Over the past three years, the administration has worked to transition the airline toward a new service model. A key pillar of this transformation is a shift in priority from capital asset acquisition to the enhancement of the employee working environment. Minister Ameen asserted that providing staff with essential basic services is now a primary government objective. Crucially, the Minister highlighted efforts to resolve the long-standing housing challenges faced by Maldivian employees. He confirmed that two plots of land have already been allocated for housing, with construction work expected to begin shortly. Additionally, a new building designed to accommodate Island Aviation’s operations is currently under construction. These initiatives align with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s broader vision to ensure the state fully supports the operational requirements of the national carrier. By focusing on human capital and infrastructure, the government aims to stabilize the airline and maximize its benefit to the Maldivian economy.
