Climate Disruption Threatens Global Stability, Minister Ali Shareef Warns in Bangkok

World ·
The Maldives has issued a stark warning to the international community, asserting that climate-driven disruptions pose a fundamental threat to global peace and stability. Speaking at the 7th Global Conference on Climate and SDG Synergies in Bangkok, Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Ali Shareef emphasized that environmental instability directly undermines human security. During the two-day event held from June 29 to 30, Minister Shareef highlighted the immediate crises facing low-lying island nations. He noted that rising sea levels and coastal erosion are already inflicting severe environmental and economic damage on the Maldives, demanding urgent action from global partners. Central to the Minister's address was a call for the immediate activation of "Loss and Damage" funding. He argued that small island states are on the front lines of a crisis they did not create, and without secured financial assistance, these vulnerable nations cannot build the necessary resilience to survive. He reaffirmed that true stability is impossible as long as climate change continues to disrupt livelihoods and displace communities. Beyond funding, Minister Shareef participated in a Ministerial Roundtable focused on the intersection of energy and climate challenges. He advocated for the integration of the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index into global financing mechanisms. This shift would ensure that financial aid is allocated based on actual risk and vulnerability rather than traditional economic metrics alone. Addressing the global energy crisis, the Minister pointed out the injustice of supply-chain bottlenecks and energy shortages affecting developing states. He stressed that countries with the lowest carbon emissions should not bear the heaviest burden of energy instability and called for international solidarity to deliver clean-energy solutions. Minister Shareef concluded by reaffirming the Maldives' commitment to acting as a constructive partner in international forums, urging a transition from rhetoric to practical, unified action to safeguard the future of atoll nations.
