Concerns Rise Over Lack of Access to Essential Healthcare Services

Politics ·
Amid growing concerns, residents across various regions of the Maldives have reported difficulties in accessing essential healthcare services and medications. Local authorities and policymakers have been urged to address these critical issues, as the lack of resources continues to affect public health. Recent reports highlight instances where even basic healthcare products, including vitamin C, are unavailable through the State Trading Organization (STO). Former Majlis member Ibrahim Ismail (Ibra) shared on social media that patients at certain hospitals are often treated with medications that are widely available locally, raising questions about the efficiency and adequacy of the healthcare system. Furthermore, concerns have been raised about potential risks related to certain medical procedures, such as injections, posing further challenges. The government has announced plans to establish a new entity, 'State Pharmaceutical and Medical Supply Corporation Limited,' to improve the availability of medications. With a budget allocation of MVR 107 million, the initiative aims to streamline pharmaceutical supplies, but concerns persist about whether this will sufficiently address the growing healthcare demands.
