Construction Begins on 50 New Housing Units for Alifu Alifu Ukulhas

Construction has officially commenced on a project to develop 50 new housing units in Alifu Alifu Ukulhas, marking a significant step in addressing the island's residential needs. The project, which was first launched during a visit by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, aims to provide modern living spaces for the local community. Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Dr. Abdulla Muththalib, alongside Altech Maldives Private Limited Manager Ibrahim Azeem, laid the foundation stone during a ceremony attended by island council representatives and local residents. The contract was awarded to Altech Maldives on November 6, 2025, with a completion timeline set for one year and seven months. Each of the 50 proposed units will feature three bedrooms, designed to accommodate growing families. The development is situated within the reclaimed area of Ukulhas, where 13 hectares of land were added to the island's footprint in 2023 to facilitate urban expansion. This housing initiative is part of a broader development strategy for the island, which has a population of approximately 1,200 people. Beyond the housing units, President Muizzu announced in August 2025 that 250 individual land plots would also be allocated from the reclaimed land, offering residents more opportunities for private ownership and development. In a parallel effort to boost the local economy and support the fishing industry, the government has also moved forward with the establishment of a five-tonne ice plant on the island. The contract for the facility was awarded to Lhehi Construction and Trading Private Limited, with the agreement signed by State Minister Mohamed Muththalib on behalf of the Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources.
