The construction of a 112-bed tertiary hospital in Villimalé is set to commence in July or August this year, Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib announced. He revealed the timeline during the foundation stone laying ceremony for a 300-unit housing project developed by the Bank of Maldives in Villimalé. The hospital project, a key pledge of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, was first unveiled in a special ceremony last November. It will be built on a 12,890 square metre site and will include outpatient and emergency services, diagnostic and treatment facilities, medical wards, and administrative offices. Medical equipment and furnishings required for tertiary-level healthcare will be provided by the Chinese government. The construction contract was awarded to a Chinese company in January, marking a significant step forward in the project's implementation. This development is expected to greatly enhance healthcare access for Villimalé residents, reducing the need to travel to Malé for advanced medical care. Tertiary hospitals offer specialized treatments that are currently limited in the Maldives, addressing a critical gap in the national health system. The initiative reflects the government's broader commitment to improving infrastructure and public services across the islands. As urban areas like Villimalé grow, such projects are essential for sustainable development and improved quality of life, supporting the Maldives' health and urbanization goals.
