The Addu City Omadhu Magistrate Court has fined an individual 116,700 rufiyaa for threatening a doctor with death and warning police that they would set fire to the island's police post.
The court convicted the person on two counts of threatening imminent harm under the Penal Code. The charges stem from an incident in 2024, when the individual visited the Omadhu Health Centre seeking treatment for a nerve issue in their neck. When the doctor refused to administer a painkilling injection, the person became angry, threatened to kill the doctor, and caused disturbances near the doctor's residence.
The person also threatened police officers who arrived to advise them to resolve the matter, saying they would set fire to the police post.
During the trial, the individual stated that they were intoxicated at the time and shouted out due to unbearable pain.
As the two cases were substantiated, the court converted the prison sentences into fines. A one-year-and-six-month prison sentence for threatening the police was converted into a fine of 112,200 rufiyaa, and a twenty-two-day prison sentence for threatening the doctor was converted into a fine of 4,500 rufiyaa.
The total fine to be paid to the state is 116,700 rufiyaa.
