Criminal Court Orders Police to Submit Evidence in Obstruction of Duty Cases
Local News ·
The Criminal Court has issued an order requiring the police to provide evidence in cases where officers claim suspects have obstructed their duties. The directive came during a hearing on Monday involving a 22-year-old male suspect arrested in connection with violence and threats against a police officer. According to the remand order, the suspect allegedly threatened an officer while being transported in a police vehicle following an altercation during his arrest. Judge Safath Habeeb highlighted the challenges faced by the court in determining the truth when evidence relies solely on testimonies from both officers and suspects. While the court has historically relied on police testimony in such cases, Judge Habeeb emphasized the need for additional evidence, such as CCTV footage or body camera recordings, to ensure fairness. The case also saw the arrest of a 19-year-old, who was remanded for 15 days, and a 30-year-old, who was remanded for two days.
