Cyber Resilience Now a Strategic Imperative for Maldives 2.0 Digital Vision

National Security Advisor Ibrahim Latheef has declared that strengthening cyber resilience is now a strategic imperative for the Maldives as the government accelerates its "Maldives 2.0" digital transformation initiative. Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Cyber-Security and Cyber-Resilience Australia Awards Fellowship 2026, Latheef emphasized that cybersecurity has evolved beyond a technical concern. He described it as a core pillar of national security, essential for maintaining public trust, driving economic growth, and ensuring effective governance. The Maldives 2.0 agenda, launched by the President, aims to create a fully digitized nation. Latheef warned that this ambition requires a robust security framework to shield government services, private businesses, and individual citizens from evolving threats. He noted that investing in these defenses today is critical to protecting the country's sovereign integrity and ensuring sustainable development. Australian High Commissioner David Jessup, who co-hosted the event, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the symbiotic relationship between digital security and economic prosperity. Jessup specifically raised alarms regarding the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence, noting that AI-driven threats are increasingly targeting government agencies globally. He stressed that international cooperation is the only viable defense against these sophisticated tools and reaffirmed Australia's commitment to deepening security ties with the Maldives. The fellowship was delivered in partnership with Edith Cowan University (ECU) in Australia, providing intensive training to 15 technical experts drawn from various Maldivian ministries and agencies. The week-long program was designed to enhance domestic capabilities and build the technical resilience required to support the Maldives 2.0 vision. The event concluded with a call for the participants to apply their newfound expertise immediately, as the nation moves toward a future where digital infrastructure is central to every aspect of public life.
