Debt Repayments Boost International Investor Confidence in Maldives, Says Finance Minister
World ·
The Maldives' systematic approach to settling state debt is driving a recovery in international investor confidence, Finance Minister Hassan Zareer told the Majlis (Parliament). The Minister stated that the government's commitment to fiscal discipline is actively reshaping the nation's credit profile and attracting new interest from global markets.
Addressing a query from Fuvahmulah South MP Ibrahim Hussein, Minister Zareer highlighted the landmark settlement of a USD 500 million sukuk issued in 2021 by the previous administration. This repayment represents the largest single tranche cleared to date. The government settled the full principal along with a USD 24.68 million coupon payment in April, notably achieving this without resorting to additional borrowing.
This specific payoff is part of a broader strategy of debt reduction. Since the current administration took office, the Maldives has achieved a cumulative debt reduction of USD 616 million. According to the Minister, these figures signal a shift toward sustainable fiscal management that is being recognized by the international community.
To ensure continued stability, the government has allocated USD 837 million for debt-service commitments in this year's budget. This transparent allocation of funds has served to restore trust among creditors and potential partners, providing a predictable framework for the country's financial obligations.
Minister Zareer further revealed that the positive shift in the Maldives' financial standing is already translating into tangible interest. Several prospective investors have recently met with government officials, expressing a positive outlook on the nation's economic trajectory and indicating their intent to launch large-scale investment projects in the Maldives.
