Defence Minister Launches Major Expansion of Girifushi Military Training Centre
World ·
Minister of Defence and National Service Hassan Rasheed has officially launched the upgrade project for the Girifushi Training Centre, marking a significant step in enhancing the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) operational capabilities.
Initiated by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, the Commander-in-Chief of the MNDF, the project aims to modernize the facility to better support the training capacity of the nation's security forces. The contract for the comprehensive development has been awarded to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).
The first phase of the expansion focuses on critical infrastructure and land acquisition. Through dredging and land reclamation, the center's landmass will increase by 13.3 hectares, expanding the island from its current 5.7 hectares. To safeguard the new terrain against environmental degradation, MTCC will implement coastal protection measures, including breakwaters, groynes, and boulder revetments to mitigate erosion.
Significant upgrades to the facility's maritime and tactical infrastructure are also underway. The harbour will be enhanced with two new jetties, measuring 40 metres and 12 metres respectively, along with an L-block quay wall. Furthermore, the current 100-metre small arms firing range will be replaced by a modern 300-metre range to provide more rigorous tactical training.
Following the completion of the initial phase, the government plans further enhancements to transform Girifushi into a state-of-the-art military hub. The MNDF has designated Girifushi as the primary center for the government’s National Service training programme. Future developments will include a dedicated officer training wing, expanded accommodation for both students and instructors, and various essential support facilities to ensure a comprehensive learning environment for the Maldives' future security personnel.
