Defence Minister Outlines Plans to Upgrade MNDF Equipment and Facilities

Minister of Defence and National Service Hassan Rasheed has reaffirmed the government's commitment to enhancing the capabilities and welfare of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), following direct mandates from President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. Speaking during the celebrations marking the 134th anniversary of the MNDF, Minister Rasheed emphasized that the occasion serves as a vital recognition of the bravery and sacrifices made by personnel in safeguarding the nation's sovereignty and its citizens. The Minister revealed that since his appointment, President Muizzu has prioritized the modernization of the force. The President's directives specifically focus on upgrading operational equipment, renovating MNDF centers and barracks, and improving the quality of uniforms and essential safety gear. According to the Minister, these improvements are already in motion. A dedicated MNDF technical team is currently conducting a comprehensive assessment to identify further gaps in infrastructure and equipment that require urgent attention to ensure the force remains operationally effective. Minister Rasheed also acknowledged the critical role of inter-agency cooperation, thanking various government ministries and state-owned enterprises for their ongoing support in these upgrading efforts. He underscored that protecting the independence and sovereignty of the Maldives remains the central priority of the current administration. The anniversary event highlighted the strategic shift toward strengthening the military wing's operational readiness, ensuring that those serving on the front lines have the tools and facilities necessary to fulfill their duties in an evolving security landscape.
