Defence Minister Praises President Muizzu’s Strategic Expansion of National Defence Force

Minister of Defence and National Service Hassan Rasheed has asserted that the current administration is investing more heavily in the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) than any previous government. Speaking at the graduation ceremony for the 73rd Basic Training Course, the Minister emphasized that these development efforts have been a priority since the first day of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s term. As a primary example of this strategic progress, Minister Rasheed highlighted the establishment of the Coast Guard Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Villimale’. He described the center as a significant leap forward in the military's operational capabilities, enhancing the nation's ability to manage maritime emergencies and security. The Minister also addressed the role of international partnerships, noting that military assistance from friendly nations has provided critical equipment and assets. He assured that the MNDF maintains full operational control over these gifted resources, ensuring they are utilized specifically to meet national security needs. Beyond infrastructure and equipment, Minister Rasheed stressed the importance of the human element within the force. He stated that a core priority of the military is to preserve freedom for future generations, which requires soldiers who are not only physically capable but also spiritually and intellectually prepared to meet their responsibilities. The graduation ceremony marks the conclusion of a rigorous four-month program conducted by the MNDF College of Defence and Security Studies. The 73rd Basic Training Course, held at the Girifushi Training Centre from March 7 to July 16, 2026, was designed to instill essential military knowledge, discipline, and patriotism in new recruits. By focusing on moral values, obedience, and high levels of physical fitness, the program aims to ensure that the newest cohort of soldiers is fully equipped to handle the complexities of modern military duties in the Maldives.
