Delcy Rodriguez Sworn in as Venezuela's Interim President After US Captures Maduro
International ·
Venezuela’s vice president and oil minister, Delcy Rodriguez, has been formally sworn in as interim president following the capture of President Nicolas Maduro by US forces in an overnight operation. Rodriguez assumed the role after Venezuela’s Supreme Court directed her to take over as acting president. Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were reportedly abducted early Saturday by US forces and flown to New York, where they appeared in court on drug and weapons charges. During her swearing-in ceremony before the National Assembly in Caracas, Rodriguez vowed to uphold the legacy of late Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez. She described Maduro and Flores as 'heroes' who had been 'kidnapped' by the United States. US President Donald Trump has asserted that Washington will maintain control over Venezuela, potentially deploying troops to the country. Reports suggest that the US administration viewed Rodriguez as a viable interim leader even before Maduro’s capture. Trump has warned of consequences if Rodriguez fails to align with US interests.
