Department of National Registration to Modernize ID Services Under Maldives 2.0 Initiative

World ·
The Department of National Registration (DNR) has announced a comprehensive upgrade of its service counters to enhance the delivery of public services under the government’s 'Maldives 2.0' digital transformation initiative. The project aims to replace existing ID card service infrastructure that has been in operation since 2008. By modernizing these counters, the DNR intends to provide citizens with a more efficient, user-friendly experience, aligning with the broader national goal of transitioning toward faster and higher-quality digital governance. A formal tender has been issued for the upgrades, with the department targeting a full launch of the new services before the end of the year. To ensure technical compliance, the DNR will hold a mandatory information session for potential bidders on August 12. Only firms that attend this session will be eligible to submit bids, with the final deadline for submissions set for August 31. This modernization effort follows a period of significant expansion for the DNR. Over the last two years, the department has increased its footprint in the Greater Male’ area by opening three new service offices in Hulhumalé Phase I, Hulhumalé Phase II, and Villimale’. To improve accessibility for Maldivians both at home and abroad, the DNR has decentralized its ID card printing services. Printing facilities are now available across all atolls of the Maldives, as well as in Sri Lanka and Malaysia. These developments, coupled with an online application system, allow citizens to apply for their identification documents digitally and collect them from their home island or the nearest available service hub, significantly reducing the need for travel to the capital.
