Dharavandhoo Airport Terminal Development to Launch Following Government Handover

Politics ·
Construction of a new terminal at Dharavandhoo Airport in Baa Atoll is scheduled to begin later this year, following the official transfer of the facility to state management. Island Aviation Services Limited (IASL) is currently selecting a contractor for the project. Managing Director Ibrahim Iyas confirmed that the selection process will be conducted on a contractor-financing basis, with the deadline for proposal submissions set for June 4. He expects the procurement phase to conclude within the coming months to ensure construction starts before the year ends. The project follows a pledge by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during a recent visit to the island. In April, the government officially handed over the airport to IASL, moving it from the private ownership of Coastline to state control to facilitate necessary upgrades and expansion. The new terminal is designed to significantly elevate the passenger experience. The facility will feature a larger arrival hall, self-service kiosks, and three boarding gates. To reflect the natural beauty of the region, the architecture will incorporate modern design elements inspired by the Maldives' underwater scenery. Once operational, the terminal will have a capacity to handle 175 passengers at a time. Key amenities will include a 75-seat lounge and a dedicated baby care facility. These upgrades will not only improve service quality but also increase operational capacity, allowing the airport to accommodate three aircraft simultaneously.
