Dharumavantha Hospital Records 27 IVF Births as Local Fertility Services Expand

Dharumavantha Hospital has reached a significant healthcare milestone, announcing the birth of 27 babies through In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) since the official launch of its fertility services in November 2023. Operating through the specialized Fertility Center established at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), the program welcomed its first newborn in January. Hospital data indicates that the center has achieved successful IVF outcomes for 35 patients over the last nine months. While eight patients are currently undergoing treatment, 27 families have already welcomed newborns, marking a successful start for the domestic initiative. The establishment of localized fertility care fulfills a key campaign pledge by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. The initiative aims to alleviate the heavy financial and psychological burdens previously faced by Maldivian couples. Until recently, residents seeking advanced fertility treatments such as IVF and Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) were forced to travel abroad, often incurring prohibitive costs and emotional stress. By bringing these specialized services to the capital, the government has provided a critical lifeline for couples struggling with infertility—a challenge that has become increasingly prevalent across the archipelago. The center's impact extends beyond standard fertility treatments; it now provides fertility preservation services for cancer patients, ensuring they maintain the possibility of conceiving after completing their medical treatments. This development represents a broader shift in the national healthcare strategy. The government has announced plans to further decentralize these essential services by expanding fertility treatments to the atolls. This expansion is expected to ensure that families living outside the capital have equitable access to reproductive healthcare without the need for extensive travel, transforming the landscape of maternal and reproductive health in the Maldives.
