Digital Framework Maldives 2.0 to Power New Thilafushi Commercial Port Operations

The Maldivian government will implement the "Maldives 2.0" digital framework as the central operating system for the new commercial port currently under construction in Thilafushi. Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed described the relocation of the Male’ Commercial Harbour as the current administration's highest-priority project, designed to catalyze unprecedented economic growth. Under the new model, approximately 80 percent of the current Male’ Commercial Harbour operations will shift to Thilafushi. This transition involves the relocation of key state entities, including Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) and the Maldives Customs Service, to create a modernized hub that rivals international port standards. Minister Saeed noted that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has mandated the full integration of port software and governance functions into the Maldives 2.0 system to ensure seamless, digitized operations. The project significantly expands physical capacity to resolve chronic congestion. The international quay wall will extend to 1.2 kilometers, enabling the facility to service up to four large vessels simultaneously. By eliminating the bottlenecks that currently force ships to remain anchored for days, the government aims to reduce operational costs for local businesses. To complement the maritime infrastructure, the government plans to build a network of warehouses, storage facilities, and retail spaces based on the "Atoll Shops" model. This integrated logistics ecosystem is expected to have a direct positive impact on consumers; faster clearance times for perishables like fruits and vegetables will reduce spoilage and lower retail prices. The Thilafushi port is designed as a state-of-the-art, multi-purpose facility capable of supporting a 24-hour logistics cycle. The transition will occur in stages, with the first phase of services scheduled to move to Thilafushi this October. The government expects the full relocation of all commercial port operations to be completed by November of next year.
