Direct Flights Between Maldives and Australia Begin After New Agreement

Local News ·
Direct flights between the Maldives and Australia can now operate without restriction, following a new bilateral air services agreement. Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Mohamed Ameen announced the development, stating it creates fresh opportunities for travel, tourism, and trade between the two nations. The agreement, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding signed by the countries' aeronautical authorities, removes all previous limitations on airline operations on the route. The government stated this initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen the Maldives' transport network and improve international connectivity, alongside several ongoing air and sea transport projects. Abdul Haris, Chairman of the Maldives Civil Aviation Authority, signed the agreement on behalf of the Maldives. The Australian signatory was Jim Wolf, Assistant Secretary for International Aviation at Australia’s Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts. According to the Maldives Civil Aviation Authority, the pact reflects the close relationship between the two countries and underscores ongoing work to enhance air links. The authority expects the removal of restrictions to facilitate increased airline operations, further supporting tourism growth and expanding trade connections.
