Dredger Arrives in Dhidhdhoo as Long-Delayed Airport Project Set to Begin Land Reclamation
Politics ·
The dredger required for land reclamation to develop an airport and essential infrastructure in HA. Dhidhdhoo arrived on the island on Saturday. Council Member Abdulla Waheed confirmed that dredging work is scheduled to begin on Monday and is expected to be completed within two to three months. The project, aimed at reclaiming the western lagoon, will add 110 hectares of land for the airport and related facilities. Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) is overseeing the reclamation. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, during a visit last year, emphasized the importance of the Dhidhdhoo Airport project as part of the government’s regional development policy. The project, awarded to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) in April 2024 at a cost of MVR 257.21 million, has faced delays. Dhidhdhoo currently relies on Hanimaadhoo International Airport, with a boat trip between the islands taking approximately 15 minutes.
