EC President Urges Voters to Treat Ballots as Sacred Trust on Voters' Day

Every vote serves as a testimony to the integrity and competence of the candidate receiving it, according to Mohamed Shakeel, the President of the Elections Commission of Maldives. Speaking in a message for National Voters’ Day, Shakeel emphasized the weight of the democratic process and the long-term impact of individual choices at the polls. Drawing on the Maldives' identity as a Muslim nation guided by Islamic principles, Shakeel described the act of voting as a sacred trust. He urged citizens to exercise their franchise with honesty, sincerity, and a sense of spiritual accountability, reminding voters that their decisions carry significant moral weight. According to the EC President, the ballots cast for the national leadership, the Majlis (Parliament), and local councils are not mere formalities. Instead, these choices directly shape the trajectory of national development, the guarantee of legal equality, and the overall stability of the country's institutions. The Maldives observes National Voters’ Day every August 25, with this year's commemorations centered on the theme "Voting is a right and a responsibility." The day was established in 2015 following a resolution during International Democracy Day ceremonies to strengthen the country's democratic fabric. The annual observance serves as a platform for the Elections Commission to conduct awareness initiatives.
