ECM Announces Immediate Political Party Withdrawal for Members Starting 2026

Politics ·
The Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) has introduced a groundbreaking change allowing political party members to withdraw from their parties immediately, starting from January 2026. This new system, accessible via ECM’s online portal, replaces the previous 14-day processing period, which had been criticized for delaying political mobility. ECM Vice Chairperson Abdul Rahman Solah stated that the reform aims to empower members and streamline administrative processes. Until December 2024, withdrawals will still take up to 14 days, but from January 2026, they will be instant upon submission. Solah emphasized that the change addresses concerns that the previous timeline hindered members from switching parties or contesting internal elections. Additionally, the ECM has reduced the processing time for joining a party to three days. However, senior officials such as chairpersons and treasurers will still undergo a more detailed withdrawal process.
