ECM to Allow Instant Political Party Withdrawal for Members From 2026
Politics ·
The Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) will introduce instant political party withdrawals for members starting in January 2026, eliminating the current mandatory 14-day waiting period. This reform, announced through the ECM's official online portal, aims to enhance political mobility and streamline administrative procedures for party members across the Maldives.
ECM Vice Chairperson Abdul Rahman Solah stated the change directly addresses long-standing complaints that the two-week delay hindered members from switching parties to run for office or participate in internal elections. The commission has already reduced the processing time for joining a political party to just three days, creating a more responsive system for political engagement.
Under the current system, members who submit withdrawal applications will still be subject to the 14-day processing period until the end of this year. However, from January 2026 onward, withdrawals will take effect immediately upon submission through the ECM portal. This significant reduction in processing time represents a major shift in how political party membership is managed in the Maldives.
While grassroots members will benefit from the immediate withdrawal option, the ECM clarified that senior party officials—including chairpersons, presidents, treasurers, and registrars—will still undergo a longer, more detailed withdrawal procedure. This distinction ensures that leadership transitions within political parties maintain necessary oversight and stability.
The reform reflects the ECM's ongoing efforts to modernize political processes and respond to citizen needs, creating a more flexible political environment while maintaining regulatory integrity.
