Economic Minister Assures Stability Amid Debt Restructuring and Market Concerns

World ·
Minister of Economic Development, Transport, and Trade Mohamed Saeed has asserted that government measures are effectively steering the Maldivian economy back toward stability, promising that current financial pressures will soon be resolved. Addressing recent public concern, Minister Saeed dismissed claims that the Maldives faces potential shortages of essential commodities, including staple foods, oil, and gas, following debt repayments. He assured the public that the supply of these critical goods remains secure and accused critics of attempting to undermine market confidence and create unnecessary public anxiety. Regarding the nation's financial obligations, the Minister confirmed that the government has deferred repayments on several key debts to manage liquidity. These include loans from the Chinese government, financing from the Abu Dhabi Fund, and various sovereign-guaranteed loans. This strategic deferment is part of a broader effort to stabilize the national treasury while maintaining essential services. Minister Saeed also strongly condemned negative reporting and social media campaigns aimed at discouraging foreign investment in the Maldives. He warned that damaging the country's international reputation—particularly within the tourism sector—would directly harm Maldivian citizens, as the industry remains the backbone of the national economy. Comparing the situation to international standards, the Minister noted that opposition parties in other democratic nations typically do not engage in rhetoric that could jeopardize their own country's economic stability. He urged for a more constructive approach to economic critique that does not risk the livelihood of the population.
