Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed has stated that the China-Maldives Investment Corporation Forum will facilitate in-depth discussions on priority development areas, paving the way for business opportunities between the two nations. Speaking at the forum’s inauguration ceremony, the minister emphasised the importance of the event in strengthening bilateral ties from a business perspective and increasing support in the business sector. He said the forum would help identify areas where the Maldives can make progress and prioritise working on those matters. ‘This forum symbolizes the extent to which both countries wish to strengthen business ties and increase support between the two countries,’ the minister remarked. Noting significant economic differences between the Maldives and China, he said there is potential for practical joint efforts that benefit both, calling the forum a strong step toward a new phase of economic cooperation. The minister also highlighted that holding the forum alongside the Maldives Expo 2026 provides additional momentum, allowing Chinese companies to showcase their products, technology, and capabilities. He stated that under the leadership of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and Chinese President Xi Jinping, relations were elevated to new heights in 2024. Referencing the Free Trade Agreement implemented on January 1 of last year, the minister noted it brought significant economic progress and said the current objective is to expand trade volume by leveraging opportunities under the agreement.
