Economic Minister Vows Stronger Protections for Workers' Rights and Welfare

Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed has affirmed that the government is implementing significant policy shifts to safeguard workers' rights and address the systemic challenges facing the labor force. Speaking at the Labour Day rally on May 1, Minister Saeed emphasized that worker welfare has become a central priority in national policymaking. He noted that current initiatives are specifically designed to respond to the immediate needs and long-term concerns of employees across various sectors. One of the key highlights of this strategy is a pledge from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to develop housing facilities near resorts. This initiative aims to support tourism workers who are currently forced to live far from their families due to the geographical nature of the industry. In the fisheries sector, the government has already introduced a system for the immediate payment of fish purchases. Minister Saeed described this move as a critical step in ensuring that the hard work of fishermen is valued and that they receive fair, timely compensation for their contributions to the economy. Beyond sector-specific changes, the government is working to harmonize salary structures between civil service employees and workers in other industries to ensure greater equity. Minister Saeed stressed that the protection of workers' rights is intrinsically linked to the overall health of the national economy. Moving forward, the administration plans to further strengthen legal protections and invest in modern facilities for workers across all industries, ensuring a more sustainable and supportive environment for the Maldivian workforce.
