eFaas Integration Ends Unauthorised Political Party Registrations in Maldives

The Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has permanently resolved the long-standing issue of citizens being registered to political parties without their knowledge by integrating the process into the national digital identity platform, eFaas. Hassan Zakariyya, a member of the ECM, announced the development during an appearance on PSM News' 'Raajje Miadhu' programme. He noted that the most significant systemic change in the commission's ongoing dealings with political organisations has been the overhaul of how party registries are maintained. To transition toward a more secure system, the commission previously launched the "Simedha Online" portal. While this was intended to streamline party enrolments, the commission continued to receive formal complaints from citizens who discovered they had been enrolled in parties involuntarily. These persistent issues prompted the commission to migrate all membership processes—including both joining and withdrawing—entirely into the eFaas digital ecosystem. According to Zakariyya, the previous system was vulnerable because the authenticity of physical membership forms could not be reliably verified, as political activities spanned the entire archipelago without a centralized administrative framework for monitoring. The move to a digital identity-verified system has yielded immediate results. Zakariyya confirmed that since the regulations governing political parties were amended and the registry was moved to eFaas, the commission has not received a single complaint regarding involuntary registration. "No Maldivian citizen can ever be registered to a political party without their explicit knowledge," Zakariyya maintained, signaling a new era of transparency and security in the nation's democratic administrative processes.
