Elections Commission Seeks Stronger Regulations Through Consultations With Political Parties

The Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) is prioritizing the strengthening of regulatory procedures used when taking action against political parties. This effort is the primary focus of a series of ongoing consultative meetings aimed at ensuring fairness and consistency in the Commission's oversight processes. Speaking to PSM News, ECM member Hassan Zakariyya emphasized that the Commission recognizes the necessity of a transparent procedure that political parties can trust and accept. By engaging directly with party leadership, the ECM intends to refine these rules to ensure they are both equitable and effective. These consultations follow a year-long hiatus. Over the last two weeks, the Commission has resumed individual meetings with political entities to discuss necessary changes and address the specific challenges parties face regarding regulatory compliance. So far, the ECM has held discussions with the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and the Maldives National Party (MNP). According to Zakariyya, the current strategy involves separate meetings with each party to identify specific grievances and proposed reforms. Once these individual discussions are complete—expected by early August—the Commission will transition to joint consultations involving all political parties to synchronize the proposed changes. Zakariyya also encouraged the general public to engage with the process by channeling their views and suggestions through their respective party leaderships, ensuring that public sentiment is represented during the reform process. The ECM highlighted its history of successful collaboration with political parties, noting that previous amendments to the Political Parties Act were achieved through similar cooperative efforts. The Commission reiterated its commitment to developing reforms that are not imposed from the top down but are shaped by the direct input and perspectives of the parties they regulate.
