Elections Commission Warns MDP and PNF Over Divisive Political Activities

Politics ·
The Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has issued formal warnings to the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and the People’s National Front (PNF), urging them to cease political activities that incite public hatred or violate social norms. In a statement released by the commission, the ECM highlighted that recent political gatherings and campaigns in Malé have been characterized by speech and actions that contradict accepted social standards. The commission noted that such activities have the potential to encourage public unrest and spread division across the community. Through official letters sent to both parties, the ECM emphasized that all political mobilization must adhere strictly to the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act. The commission warned that current activities and gatherings must comply with existing legal and regulatory requirements to ensure public order is maintained. Beyond the legality of assemblies, the ECM specifically cautioned against the use of unethical rhetoric. The letters instruct parties to refrain from making derogatory remarks about the personal lives of party leaders, members, or activists. Furthermore, the commission warned against the dissemination of unverified or false information intended to provoke anger or hatred within society. Addressing the use of urban spaces, the ECM advised against holding political rallies or activities in public streets and open areas without obtaining the necessary legal authorizations. This move follows increasing concerns raised by the general public regarding political conduct that disrupts daily life and defies social norms. While maintaining a firm stance on regulations, the Elections Commission stated that it welcomes all political activities, provided they are conducted within the boundaries of the law. The ECM reiterated that maintaining a respectful and lawful political environment is essential for the stability of the nation's democratic processes.
