The Elections Commission (EC) has announced a significant shortage of officials required for the upcoming Local Council Elections scheduled for April. EC has stated that despite preparations, the necessary number of officials has not been secured, potentially affecting the smooth conduct of the elections. The EC revealed that they are actively seeking 7,000 officials to manage the voting process across various islands and councils. The commission has set a deadline for November 21st to finalize the recruitment of these officials. EC President Mohamed Zahid emphasized that while the lack of officials poses a challenge, the priority remains to ensure the electoral process is conducted fairly and efficiently. He added that training sessions for the selected officials are already being prepared to equip them for their roles. The EC assured that despite the hurdles, measures are in place to address the shortfall and uphold the integrity of the elections.
