Electric Vehicles to Aid Irrigation in Maldives' Ambitious 5-Million Tree Programme
Local News ·
The Ministry of Tourism and Environment (MoTE) in the Maldives has announced plans to procure electric vehicles for irrigation purposes under the nation's ambitious 5-million tree programme. During a press conference on December 25th, Minister Thoriq Ibrahim revealed that 1,027,372 trees have been planted so far, with the target now expanded to 6.4 million trees thanks to contributions from state-owned enterprises, private sector entities, and civil society organisations. Notably, two teak trees have been planted in every inhabited island across the Maldives. Minister Ibrahim emphasised the importance of water for plant growth, stating that electric vehicles will be essential for irrigation, especially on larger islands and along road infrastructures. He also highlighted the widespread support from government agencies, schools, councils, and the public. The initiative aims to restore native plant populations, enhance biodiversity, and combat climate change, paving the way for a greener and healthier future.
