Emirates Resumes Maldives Flights After Four-Month Suspension Due to Middle East Unrest

World ·
Emirates has officially resumed its scheduled flight services to the Maldives, ending a four-month suspension triggered by regional unrest in the Middle East. The airline, which has served the archipelago for over three decades, is also restarting its scheduled operations to neighboring Sri Lanka. The daily services operate as a strategic extension of flight EK652 from Dubai to Malé, with the aircraft continuing to Colombo after the Maldivian stop. The return leg, EK653, follows the reverse route, stopping in Malé before heading back to Dubai. Emirates is deploying Boeing 777 aircraft to manage the route's capacity. This resumption is a critical development for the Maldivian tourism sector. With approximately 30% of tourists arriving in the country via Middle Eastern hubs, the return of one of the world's leading carriers is expected to significantly improve connectivity for travelers originating from Europe, the Americas, and the Middle East. The suspension was part of a broader regional crisis where closed airspace led to massive disruptions across Gulf carriers. Industry data indicates that more than 30,000 flights were cancelled across the region, affecting other major airlines including Qatar Airways and Etihad Airways. Emirates has since focused on a gradual network recovery, resuming services to over 110 destinations by mid-March using verified safe flight paths. Tourism industry experts suggest that the return of these flights will not only bolster visitor arrivals but also strengthen trade ties between the Maldives and the United Arab Emirates. Additionally, the shared route is expected to provide a reciprocal boost to Sri Lanka's export sector. The restoration of services follows joint coordination between the Maldivian government and tourism stakeholders, who worked to minimize the economic impact of the flight disruptions. While many airlines have already returned to the region, the return of Emirates marks a significant step in stabilizing the Maldives' air connectivity and tourism pipeline.
