Ex-Vice President Jamiil warns land sales to foreigners threaten Maldives' Islamic foundations

Politics ·
Former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has strongly criticised the government's policy of selling land to foreign entities in a manner that allows them to own it, arguing that it undermines the main pillars of the Maldives. Speaking on Raajje TV's talk show program, Jameel said that selling land to foreign entities would inevitably allow non-Muslims to buy land, which would necessitate granting religious freedom to those entities. He expressed concern that amendments to the Qanoonul Uquubat have prevented discussions on religion, including verses from the Holy Quran regarding Jews and Christians. Jameel also criticised the government for a lack of development three years after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's term and questioned the President's authority to allow Jews and Christians to visit areas where mosques were built in marinas.
