Favara-UPI Integration to Accelerate Trade and Investment Under India-Maldives FTA

World ·
The Maldives has integrated its instant payment system, Favara, with India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI), a move expected to significantly bolster bilateral economic ties and support the goals of the proposed India-Maldives Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Minister for Economic Development, Transport, and Trade Mohamed Saeed described the integration as a milestone in digital and financial cooperation. Spearheaded by the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), the project links the Maldives to one of the world's largest real-time payment networks, making cross-border transactions faster, safer, and more cost-effective. According to Minister Saeed, the initiative reflects a shared vision between the leaders of both nations to enhance economic cooperation through people-centric services. The system is designed to simplify personal remittances for citizens while opening new doors for tourism, investment, and cross-border trade. While the current phase focuses on individual transfers, the government plans to expand the system to include merchant and business-to-business (B2B) payments. This expansion is intended to provide commercial communities in both countries with more efficient tools for trade, further reinforcing the foundation of the upcoming FTA. The service has initially launched in partnership with the Bank of Maldives (BML) and the Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB). Account holders at these institutions can now send funds directly to UPI accounts in India via their mobile or online banking portals, removing the need for third-party intermediaries. Under this new arrangement, transfers made in Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR) or US Dollars (USD) are credited to the recipient's Indian account almost instantly in Indian Rupees (INR), streamlining the financial flow between the two neighboring nations.
