Feeali Fishermen Forced Out of Industry as Skipjack Tuna Prices Plummet

Politics ·
Fishermen in Feeali island, Faafu Atoll, are facing a dire situation as plummeting skipjack tuna prices have forced many to abandon the industry. According to Ibrahim Naseem, a local fisherman, the price of skipjack tuna has dropped drastically from MVR 85-90 per kilo to below MVR 30, making it impossible for many to sustain their livelihoods. Naseem revealed that while the island once had 18 active fishing boats, only two or three remain operational today. The government had pledged to establish a minimum purchase price of MVR 80-100 per kilo, provide subsidized fuel, and improve access to ice, but these promises remain unfulfilled. In response, the Skipjack Tuna Fishermen’s Union has announced plans to stage a protest on Fishermen’s Day to demand action from the government. The Union expressed disappointment, stating that the current administration has failed to address their concerns despite previous campaign promises.
