FENAKA’s last island handed over to STELCO, completing utility transfer

Local News ·
The last island where Fenaka Corporation was providing utility services has been handed over to State Electric Company (STELCO), completing a nationwide transfer ordered by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. A ceremony was held in L. Fonadhoo yesterday to mark the handover, where STELCO Managing Director Dr. Ali Azwar hoisted the national flag and Ahmed Sharni, General Manager of the company's South Regional Department, hoisted the STELCO flag. Speaking at the event, MD Azwar said there is high expectation among citizens for improved services and described the decision as part of the President's strong vision and forward-looking policies. He assured that the company and its employees will work tirelessly to meet citizens' expectations. STELCO previously provided services in Malé, Kaafu Atoll, Alif Alif Atoll, Dhaalu Atoll, and Vaavu Atoll. Before the government decided to dissolve Fenaka, services in Baa Atoll, Laamu Atoll, and Meemu Atoll had already been transferred. With the latest change, utility services for 127 remaining islands across the atolls have officially been brought under STELCO. To ensure stable management, STELCO has made changes to its administrative structure and deployed four teams in the atolls. President Muizzu announced the decision to dissolve Fenaka and the Road Development Corporation last September, citing audit reports showing Fenaka was misused by the previous MDP government. Fenaka has stated it will work to complete the transfer before Ramadan and that no employees will be dismissed during this phase.
