The final segment of the Thilamaale Bridge project, connecting Vilimaale and Kulhiufalhu, has been paved and completed, marking a major milestone in the largest development project in the Maldives. Infrastructure Minister Dr. Abdullah Muttalib announced the completion on social media platform X, stating that paving and finishing the last segment on Friday connects the two islands and represents significant progress in linking the islands. The Thilamaale Bridge project, initiated under the government of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, includes three main bridges: connecting Malé and Vilimaale, Vilimaale and Kulhiufalhu, and Kulhiufalhu and Thilaafushi. The final segment of the Malé-Vilimaale bridge has also been completed, connecting the capital to Vilimaale. Minister Muttalib welcomed the contractors, Afcons and Arup, and the team from the Ministry of Housing and Environment, and expressed gratitude to India for its assistance. The project, supported by India, includes three bridges, co-ways, and road networks totaling 6.7 kilometers, along with interchange points and parking areas. The entire project costs $500 million, funded by a $100 million grant and a $400 million line of credit from the Government of India. The work has been entrusted to Afcons Infrastructure of India. The Indian High Commission in the Maldives has previously stated that this bridge is one of the highest precast segment bridges built in the world, with precast segments of the superstructure reaching 8.177 meters in height.
