Finance Minister Hassan Zareer Appointed President of Local Government Authority

The Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises, Hassan Zareer, has been appointed as the President of the Local Government Authority (LGA). Zareer takes over the leadership of the authority following the resignation of former Finance Minister Moosa Zameer from the Cabinet on June 8. As President of the LGA, Zareer assumes a critical role in the Maldives' governance structure. Under Article 140 of the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives and Article 59 of the Decentralization Act, the President of the Local Government Authority serves as the primary official accountable to the Majlis (the Maldivian Parliament) on behalf of the Authority. The appointment leverages Zareer's extensive background in financial management and public administration. He holds a Bachelor of Accounting and a Master of Science in Finance from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). In addition to his academic qualifications, Zareer is a recognized professional in the global accounting sphere. He is a Fellow Chartered Management Accountant (FCMA, CGMA) in the United Kingdom and a Certified Practising Accountant (CPA) in Australia, bringing significant technical expertise to the oversight of local government administration.
