Finance Minister Moosa Zameer Resigns Amid National Debt Management Efforts
Politics ·
Moosa Zameer has resigned from his position as the Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises. The resignation was officially confirmed by the government's Chief Spokesperson, Mohamed Hussain Shareef.
While the government has acknowledged the departure, officials have not disclosed the specific reasons behind the Minister's decision to step down. The vacancy comes at a critical juncture for the nation's economy, as the Maldives continues to navigate complex financial challenges.
Zameer's tenure in President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's administration was marked by several shifts in responsibility. He was initially appointed as the Minister of Foreign Affairs before being moved to the Ministry of Finance during a cabinet reshuffle in September 2024. His role evolved further when the President restructured the cabinet to downsize government ministries, resulting in Zameer overseeing the combined portfolio of finance and public enterprises.
During his time at the helm of the treasury, Zameer was tasked with managing a deeply concerning financial landscape. Under the direct guidance of the President, he led significant efforts focused on debt servicing and strategic financial management to stabilize the state's economy.
The administration has yet to announce who will assume the responsibilities of the Finance portfolio or whether an acting minister will be appointed to ensure continuity in the country's economic management.
