Fire at Funaadhoo's only petrol shed contained, 18 treated for smoke inhalation
Local News ·
A fire that broke out at the only petrol shed in Funaadhoo, Shaviyani Atoll, on Sunday morning has been brought under control, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). The blaze, which started around 8:00 am, destroyed one house and damaged three others, along with four adjacent workshops.
NDMA reported that no serious injuries occurred, but 18 people were treated at the hospital for smoke inhalation. Funaadhoo Council President Mohamed Aadil confirmed that those affected were receiving medical care.
The fire completely gutted the privately-run petrol shed, forcing the island of approximately 3,500 residents to face a fuel shortage. Aadil stated that consultations with the government are underway to find alternative fuel supply arrangements.
The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and local residents are working to extinguish the remnants of the fire. Due to ongoing popping sounds from the area, nearby families have been temporarily relocated to safer homes. NDMA is also assessing needs and providing assistance to affected individuals.
