Fireesh Found in Malé, Taken Back into Police Custody
Local News ·
Ahmed Fireesh, who fled after being arrested in connection with a hunger strike by a local individual frustrated over an unresolved public nuisance issue, was found in Malé today and taken back into police custody. Fireesh was arrested following the hunger strike by Mohamed Saeed at the Henveiru Police Station last month. The Criminal Court had sentenced Fireesh to 15 days detention, set to expire tomorrow, but police said he escaped while being treated at the National Drug Agency (NDA) in Himmafushi, Kaafu Atoll. Police spokesperson Ahmed Shiyam confirmed Fireesh was located in Malé and brought back. Fireesh faces charges of intimidation, property damage, brawling, and obstructing police duties. Former Attorney General Hussain Shamim stated that separate cases could be filed for each crime, potentially leading to at least six years in prison under existing laws.
