The first group of Maldivian pilgrims has departed for Saudi Arabia today, marking the beginning of this year's Hajj pilgrimage. A total of 235 travelers boarded the initial flight operated by Saudi Arabian Airlines, the first of four scheduled flights transporting the nation's official quota of 1,000 pilgrims.
To ensure a streamlined journey, the remaining 765 pilgrims will depart in three subsequent groups. On May 17, 252 pilgrims will fly via Maldivian, followed by 250 travelers on a Saudi Arabian Airlines flight on May 18. The final group of 252 will depart on May 19 via Maldivian.
Logistical support has been intensified this year, with the Maldives Hajj Corporation managing luggage collection and early check-in procedures. To prevent delays, special bus services are transporting pilgrims to Velana International Airport five hours prior to departure. Additionally, Maldivian travelers continue to utilize the "Makkah Route" initiative, which allows immigration clearance before departure to bypass congestion at Jeddah airport and facilitate direct hotel transfers.
Significant infrastructure improvements have been implemented to address the physical challenges of the pilgrimage, particularly in Mina. Following a relocation last year to a higher service category, the government has increased sanitation facilities. A new restroom building has brought the total capacity to over 60 toilets, with dedicated sections for men and women. Catering services in Mina have also been expanded with new kitchen facilities to improve meal quality.
The positioning of the Maldivian tent area in Mina along a main road is expected to ease transportation and provide a more convenient route for the symbolic stoning ritual at Jamarat. Further enhancements include the fencing of the designated tent area in Arafat, ensuring a private space exclusively for Maldivian pilgrims based on feedback from previous years.
Authorities have confirmed that all essential requirements, including hotel accommodations, catering services, and medical care facilities in Saudi Arabia, have been finalized to ensure a safe and comfortable spiritual journey for all participants.
