First Lady Urges Collective Action to Improve Mental Well-being in Maldives Workplaces

World ·
First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has called for a collaborative, team-based approach to strengthening mental health within professional environments, warning that workplace safety and inclusivity are critical to employee well-being. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Maldives' first-ever seminar dedicated to workplace mental health, the First Lady identified discrimination, general discomfort, and a lack of psychological safety as primary drivers of mental distress among workers. She emphasized that addressing these issues requires the active involvement of managers at all levels in decision-making processes to ensure every employee's mental state receives the necessary attention. Highlighting the urgency of the issue, the First Lady cited a 2020/2021 survey revealing that one in five people in the Maldives experienced symptoms of depression. She stressed that these statistics demand serious national attention and a unified effort to protect the well-being of the workforce. Beyond the human cost, the First Lady noted the institutional benefits of prioritizing mental health. According to research, organizations with mentally healthy employees see a significant decrease in absenteeism and tardiness, alongside a reduction in administrative violations. Furthermore, such environments foster higher work morale and lead to increased satisfaction for the citizens and clients receiving services from these institutions. The landmark seminar is a joint initiative by the National Mental Health Department and the Civil Service Commission. It specifically targets the systemic challenges of maintaining mental wellness within the public sector. Approximately 60 participants are attending the event, including human resources officials from various civil service institutions, senior city officials, and leadership from regional hospitals. The program marks a significant milestone as the first professional seminar of its kind held in the Maldives, signaling a shift toward integrating mental health support into the nation's administrative framework.
