First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has emphasized that emotional support and kindness are essential components of care for individuals living with thalassemia. Speaking in a social media post to mark International Thalassemia Day on May 8, the First Lady highlighted that compassionate words from society constitute half of the treatment process for those battling the blood disorder.
In her message, the First Lady appealed to the Maldivian public to show greater empathy and understanding toward affected individuals. She noted that a supportive social environment plays a pivotal role in the overall healing and psychological well-being of patients, who often face lifelong medical challenges.
To complement these calls for social support, the government has expanded critical healthcare infrastructure for thalassemia management. The Maldivian Blood Services have been officially launched under the Malé City Group of Hospitals, operating from the Orange Hiyaa facility in Hulhumalé. This center serves as a hub for specialized care and blood management.
Further enhancing diagnostic capabilities, the government has established a dedicated DNA laboratory. This facility has already commenced providing a range of thalassemia-related testing services, aimed at improving early detection and management of the condition within the archipelago.
International Thalassemia Day is observed annually to raise global awareness about the condition and to mobilize support for the families and individuals affected by the disorder. By combining clinical advancements with social compassion, the Maldives aims to improve the quality of life for all thalassemia patients.
