First National Survey to Map Agriculture Workforce and Practices

Local News ·
The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare will launch the Maldives' first nationwide agricultural survey this year. The project aims to create a comprehensive data profile of the sector, supporting evidence-based policy and sustainable development. The ministry estimates over 7,000 individuals are currently engaged in agriculture, with women comprising more than half of this workforce. The data collection will be conducted in partnership with the Maldives Bureau of Statistics and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). The survey seeks detailed information on crop varieties, farming methods, and the specific needs and challenges faced by farmers. It will also identify individuals working in agriculture who are not formally registered, capturing a complete picture of the sector's human capital. Officials confirmed the survey questionnaire has been developed and pretested. To streamline the process, the ministry is also creating a dedicated data application to manage the collection and analysis of agricultural information. This foundational data is expected to guide future investments and initiatives, strengthening the resilience and productivity of Maldivian agriculture.
