First passenger-carrying drone demonstrated in Maldives

Technology ·
A drone capable of carrying a person, known as an eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) aircraft, has been demonstrated in the Maldives for the first time. The demonstration took place in the area connecting Hulhumalé Phase 1 and Phase 2, organized by the Ministry of Economic Development and Tourism and the Chinese Embassy in the Maldives, showcasing footage of the aircraft taking off and landing. The drone was developed by China's company Coolfly. The Ministry of Tourism stated that this initiative will help assess the legal framework, safety measures, infrastructure, and technical expertise needed for such aircraft in the Maldives. Potential uses include transportation of goods between islands, medical evacuations, and environmental inspections. The ministry said the technology could create new industries and job opportunities. The activity was based on growing economic and technological ties between the Maldives and China, following consultations at the China-Maldives Investment Forum on October 28, 2026.
