Fishermen Highlight Key Demands on Their Day of Celebration
Politics ·
On Fishermen's Day, Mauroof Zakir, a member of the Yellowfin Tuna Fishermen's Union and the Public Accounts Committee, emphasized that significant efforts are underway to address the pressing demands of fishermen. Speaking during a grand event organized by BKM YOO in the Maldives, Mauroof highlighted that the government's engagement with fishermen has been driven by their critical demands, particularly concerning fair pricing and better support for their livelihoods. He stressed the importance of ensuring that fishermen receive reasonable rates for their catch, such as 80 to 100 MVR per tuna, and improved access to essential resources like ice and fuel. Mauroof also noted that despite the government's promises, some demands remain unmet, calling for greater accountability and transparency in addressing these issues. The celebration of Fishermen's Day was marked by a focus on recognizing their contributions and advocating for their rights.
