Fishermen to Protest Over Unfulfilled Promise to Raise Yellowfin Tuna Prices

Local News ·
The Bodu Kanneli Masveringe Union (BKMU) has announced plans to stage a protest on Wednesday over the government's failure to raise the floor price for the purchase of yellowfin tuna, as promised. The protest coincides with Fishermen’s Day. In a statement on Tuesday, BKMU highlighted that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s manifesto included three key initiatives for yellowfin tuna fishermen: having the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) begin purchasing yellowfin tuna, setting a floor price of MVR 80-100, and improving access to fuel at base rates and ice. Despite repeated appeals since the administration took office, none of these pledges have been fulfilled. Disillusioned fishermen have decided to hold a peaceful protest following their annual meeting on Wednesday. The union has called on all fishermen to join the protest to advocate for their rights and demand solutions for their concerns.
