FIU Chief Suspended Amid Sexual Harassment Allegations

Opinion ·
Ismail Sajid, the recently appointed head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) at the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), has been suspended following allegations of sexual harassment. Sources reveal that Sajid was barred from reporting to the office on Sunday after the allegations came to light. The investigation is currently ongoing. Despite the FIU's critical role in combating financial crimes, the MMA has not publicly addressed the suspension or responded to inquiries. Sajid, who declined to comment on the allegations, was appointed to the position in August after a confidential FIU report involving a senior political figure was leaked. Prior to his role at the FIU, Sajid served on the Tax Appeal Tribunal. The FIU plays a pivotal role in analyzing financial transactions related to money laundering and terrorism financing, providing actionable intelligence to law enforcement agencies.
