In a landmark decision, the Maldivian government has standardized and increased monthly allowances for the national football team, setting both players and officials at MVR 7,000 each. This move fulfills President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's campaign promise and represents the first time such equalization has occurred.
The change, implemented following a National Sports Council decision and communicated to sports associations via ministry circular, replaces the previous structure of MVR 5,000 for athletes and MVR 2,500 for officials. Although the new rate was supposed to take effect in May, payments continued at the old amounts until recently.
To address the delay, the ministry confirmed that athletes will receive an additional MVR 2,000 for each month since May, while officials will get an extra MVR 4,500 monthly for the same period. The implementation comes after athletes and sports associations raised concerns about the delayed higher payments.
Earlier this month, President Muizzu personally assured players during an evening tea meeting with the senior national team that the allowance increase would be processed promptly, demonstrating his commitment to supporting Maldivian sports development.
